Sydney‘s train network has been thrown into chaos after several major lines were impacted by a signal failure.

Passengers travelling on the T8 Airport and South Line, T2 Leppington and Inner West Line and T3 Liverpool and Inner West Line should allow extra time for their journeys on Monday afternoon, Transport for NSW said.

The disruption was caused by urgent repairs to signal equipment at Town Hall earlier on Monday.

T8 services are running at a reduced frequency, with commuters warned to expect gaps in services during the afternoon peak.

T2 and T3 services are experiencing delays, and passengers may encounter different stopping patterns as the Rail Operations Centre works to restore the timetable.

“Sydney Trains apologises for the inconvenience and thanks passengers for their patience,” Transport for NSW said.

The T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line, which was also disrupted earlier due to the signal issue, has since resumed normal operations.

Some passengers reported waiting up to 40 minutes.

Commuters are advised to plan ahead by visiting transportnsw.info or using trip planning apps before travelling.
