A major emergency response is currently underway in North Geelong, with multiple fire crews battling an industrial fire at a car wreckage yard.

The fire broke out just after 4pm on Tuesday on the corner of Thompsons Rd and Armstrong St and caused a number of “explosions” from gas bottles.

An emergency warning was issued for anyone in the area to leave immediately.

“Do not enter the area — it is extremely dangerous,” VicEmergency said.

The scale of the emergency has prompted authorities to deploy significant resources to the area, with crews working to bring it under control.

Thompson Road between Separation and Victor streets have been closed, as has Armstrong St and Pashley Ave.

Residents in surrounding areas have been warned they will see black smoke.
