Lego has entered the digital age with the launch of its first smart brick at an electronics show in Las Vegas.

The Danish toy giant has created a brick containing a tiny computer chip, aiming to make play interactive without screens.

It comes to life with lights and sounds when it is moved, marking what is being described as Lego’s biggest change since the introduction of the first mini-figures in 1978.

“As the world evolves, so do we, innovating to meet the play needs of each new generation,” said Julia Goldin, Lego Group’s chief product and marketing officer.

“Lego Smart Play is the next exciting chapter in our Lego System in Play and something we are super excited about being able to bring to the world at this scale.”

The first smart play set will be Star Wars themed, combining the beloved franchise with the new interactive technology, in March.

The announcement was made at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where tech companies from around the world showcase their latest innovations.
