Questions have again been raised if AFL clubs are training hard enough after St Kilda coach Ross Lyon revealed how is club managed an eight-day break.
The Saints copped two soft-tissue injuries on Sunday night with superstar Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera (hamstring) and Mason Wood (calf) both ruled out for the remainder of the season.

It’s the latest additions to a lengthy injury list that includes Max King (hamstring), Jack Sinclair (calf) and Sam Flanders (Achilles).
Speaking after the loss to Carlton, Lyon admitted they were “scratching their heads” at the latest injuries as he revealed their schedule in the lead-up to the game.
“We had an eight-day break, so we played Saturday, had Sunday and Monday off, half-day Tuesday, normal 3km, T1 Wednesday, Thursday off, Friday our normal T2, they train well, then Saturday off.
“So we’re scratching our heads a little bit on the soft tissue.”

“So I just wonder, league-wide, whether, and I’ve said this before, this isn’t a St Kilda thing, but I’ve heard Ross say they have 16 contact hours a week for full-time professional athletes,” Cornes said on The Agenda Setters.
“League-wide, are we actually training hard enough? And this is a broader discussion with the high-performance minds in the game, but I just don’t think we’re getting enough work into our players, and that’s why the injury rates are so high.
“Too much time off, not enough training during the week. Had a long break in that game, to hear that they trained probably 4kms for the week and all those days off and time off.
“That was a shock to me to hear him go through that week.”
AFL great Nick Riewoldt added: “It’s changed a lot.”
Cornes has previously spoken about the lack of training over the pre-season.
“What happens when players are given a ridiculous 93 days off post-season + a Christmas break and then launch back into competitive training unconditioned? Absolute injury carnage across the league,” he tweeted earlier this year.
Last year, Cornes highlighted Sydney’s off-season break as a “joke”.
“Their (Sydney’s) last game is on August 23,” Cornes said at the time.
“Their senior players are back on November 24.
“That is a 93-day break for our AFL players and you are telling me these are full-time players.
“It is a joke and no wonder the skill level (is questionable and) injuries are high. It’s for that reason.
“(AFL players) get far too much time off (and) that’s not including Christmas.”
