Jennifer Finch, the bassist for veteran rock band L7, has died days after announcing she had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer and would miss the group’s farewell tour. 

The legendary punk outfit last week announced they would proceed with their swansong without Finch, who had given her bandmates her blessing to do so.

“We will honour her request while making her care and well-being our immediate priority,” a statement at the time said.

Finch was born in Los Angeles in 1966 and died just weeks shy of her 60th birthday. She joined L7 in 1986 and was a key member as the group became one of the defining acts of the 1990s, earning a cult following with songs including Pretend We’re Dead, S***list and Andres.  

“With a very heavy heart we announce that our beloved bandmate, friend and fellow troublemaker Jennifer Finch has passed away today,” a statement from the band on Sunday (AEST) read.

“She had a long courageous fight with brain cancer and was loved by many wonderful friends, musical peers and fans worldwide. We love you Jenniffer.”

Former Hole frontwoman Courtney Love last week described L7 as “one of the most important bands in history”, in a post encouraging her 1.3 million followers to donate to a GoFundMe set up to cover Finch’s mounting medical bills.

The band’s third studio album Bricks Are Heavy, released in 1992, was their biggest commercial success, breaking into the Top 50 in Australia and selling more than 300,000 copies worldwide. It was co-produced by Butch Vig, renowned for his work on Nirvana’s Nevermind and albums by a range of acts including The Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Green Day and his own band Garbage.

L7 last toured Australia in late 2024 as part of the Good Things travelling festival.

The band’s six-week Last Hurrah tour is scheduled to begin on October 6 in San Francisco, before concluding with a hometown show in Los Angeles on November 14.
