Two more powerful, performance-focused versions of the new-generation Honda Prelude sports car have been unveiled in the United States, offering a taste of the potential Type R flagship enthusiasts have been craving.

The Honda Prelude returned in 2026 after more than two decades on hiatus, offered exclusively with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder hybrid powertrain and an electronic continuously variable automatic transmission (e-CVT).

Calls for a more capable model have come from enthusiasts, with Honda yet to confirm any other powertrain, or even a manual gearbox option, for its new sports car.

So far, Honda Australia has only confirmed it's working with legendary tuner Mugen to offer performance parts for Prelude and other models in Australia.

Unveiled at the annual SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) show in Las Vegas, Nevada, which features aftermarket performance parts and wild concepts, the first of the two modified Preludes was exhibited by Honda itself.

The Prelude Club Racer featured on the brand’s Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) stand and was “built to compete in time attack track events by Hasport Performance”, a longstanding aftermarket Honda specialist based in Phoenix, Arizona.

While it runs suspension tuning derived from the Integra Type S TCX race car, the most significant of the Club Racer’s modifications is the ‘K20C1’ 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine and six-speed manual transmission from the Civic Type R.

The production version of the latest Prelude uses the same underpinnings as the Civic, along with upgraded Brembo brakes and suspension components derived from the Civic Type R.

This makes the Civic Type R’s engine and gearbox a natural next step towards a more capable Prelude.

The Australian-spec Civic Type R makes 235kW/420Nm, enabling a claimed 0–100km/h time of 5.4 seconds. That compares with the Prelude’s 135kW/315Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol hybrid powertrain and 8.2-second 0–100km/h time.

The Civic Type R’s engine is also fitted to another Prelude at SEMA, exhibited by aftermarket tuning house Throtl on the Idemitsu Lubricants stand as its interpretation of a Prelude Type R.

“When Honda revived one of its most iconic nameplates for 2026, enthusiasts had plenty to say. The hybrid-only coupe and lack of a manual transmission left many wondering what could have been,” a media release said.

“Idemitsu and Throtl took that challenge, spending the past year creating a one-of-a-kind Honda build that reimagines the icon with the performance, power, and driver-focused spirit enthusiasts have been craving.”

Beneath its modified bodywork, which includes a custom carbon-fibre bonnet, the Throtl Prelude runs an upgraded version of the Type R donor engine with a Pure Turbos turbocharger upgrade, upgraded fuel injectors and fuel pump, a larger intercooler, an upgraded radiator and oil coolers, and a centre-exit exhaust system.

Intriguingly, the original high-voltage hybrid battery remains in the vehicle, but is disconnected, as it supports the rear-seat mounting arrangement. No final power or torque figures have been provided.

Neither build confirms plans for a production Prelude Type R.

Honda has never produced a Type R version of the Prelude. However, Honda Australia director Rob Thorp told CarExpert earlier this year that, if one were produced, it would be on the local office’s wish list.

“There’s a part of me that wants to ‘Type R’ everything,” Mr Thorp told CarExpert when asked whether a Prelude Type R – if introduced – would be on the brand’s shopping list. “Type R’s just fun … So yeah, why not?”
