The headmaster of an all-boys’ private school has been praised for his response to alleged sexual assault incidents involving students at other schools.

While not linked to any of the alleged incidents, northwest Sydney’s St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill is part of the private school system that is being scrutinised following two alleged sexual assaults in August.

In a speech to the school on August 27, principal Michael Blake told students that while “it has been a difficult week to be a man … it’s been infinitely harder to be female”.

A copy of the speech has since been praised and shared among parents of “Joeys” students in social media groups, the Daily Telegraph reported.

“I want every young woman who encounters a Joe Boy to be safer because you are there — not merely safe from you, safer because of you,” the masthead reported.

“Gentleman, here is the part I particularly want you to understand. For many women, this has not been a hard week, it is a sad ongoing reality.

“This is not about how uncomfortable these stories make us feel as men, but the broader issue that belongs to all of us.”

Blake continued by pushing students not to “draw the line between a good bloke and a destructive one” at criminal allegations, adding that it must be “drawn much earlier”.

His speech came after students from St Gregory’s College, in Sydney’s west, and students from Scots College, in Sydney’s east, were accused of separate sexual assaults.

Three 17-year-old boys, two of whom attended St Gregory’s, are accused of raping a girl of the same age at a home in NSW’s Macarthur region on August 15.

Three Scots College students, two aged 14 and one aged 13, are also facing sexual assault charges, accused of aggravated sexual assault and sexual touching of a 14-year-old girl in an alleyway on July 15.

Both schools penned letters to parents confirming accusations had been made about students, who remain before the courts.

“I am very sorry to have to share the following news with our community,” St Gregory’s College principal Matthew Brennan said.

“As this is an ongoing criminal investigation and before the courts, it is important that we do and say nothing that could compromise those independent processes.

“It is abhorrent, what is alleged by police, and is the antithesis of what we stand for and the values that we embrace.

“These are very serious of allegations and the judicial process must now be allowed to take its course free of any commentary.

“We ask everyone to avoid speculation or sharing of information that could impact the parties involved or the independent process now underway.”

Meanwhile, Scots confirmed it was co-operating with ongoing investigations and was taking the “matter seriously”.

“We believe it is important that the police investigation is allowed to take its course and it would not be appropriate for the College to comment further on the matter.”
