A gun has been found in plain sight at a Brisbane shooting scene, hours after police finished their extensive search of the area.

The weapon was discovered by a 7NEWS cameraman just across the road in Aspley from where police had been looking, lying on a grassed area at the front of a home.

“It was one, two metres away from the actual public footpath,” cameraman Tim Foster said.

“I was a bit in disbelief. I thought I had to do a double take. I was like, there’s no way that’s just sitting right there, is it?”

The discovery has shocked residents who watched police search the street with torches until 2am.

“Lord knows how many police here were last night with torches until two o’clock in the morning and again this morning. How did they get a gun around the corner and nobody’s seen that?” resident Shane Cahill said.

“It terrifies the s*** out of me. That gun was laying, any one of these kids could have grabbed that gun.”

After 7NEWS alerted police, officers returned to guard the weapon until a specialist team arrived.

In a statement, Queensland Police said: “forensic investigations are ongoing to determine whether the firearm is a functioning weapon” and “it’s too early to determine whether it’s linked to the reported shooting.”

The shooting happened just before 11pm on Tuesday, when a 24-year-old man was shot in the groin.

“We just heard this like massive bang and then there was two and we were like, okay, it’s kind of weird and then we just heard this like screaming,” neighbour Rosa Cook said.

Neighbour Matt Gerrard said he heard someone saying: “Somebody help, please. And even like, I’ve been shot like my leg.”

Gerrard didn’t know if the shooter was still on the street but raced to help using a towel to try to stop the bleeding until paramedics arrived.

“Just the adrenaline kicked in and I was like, I don’t want this guy dying like on the front lawn,” he said.

“It was just such a heroic act,” a resident said.

“They’re amazing. Yeah, we’re going to make them some biscuits to say thank you for being so brave,” another resident said.

The man was in a serious condition when he was brought to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. He’s had surgery and is now stable, improving enough to speak with police.

The circumstances and motive are still unclear. The shooter is still on the run.
