Melbourne artist Annalise Lawn is going global with her business phenomenon.

Capturing the hearts of fur parents looking to commemorate their late furry companion into a timeless keepsake.

The business model began when she would spend hours painting her own pet cat, Lunar, and then once Lunar passed from brain cancer, she had an overwhelming sense of grief.

The smallest of creatures became her lifelong companions, and rather then get caught up in her grief. she wanted to celebrate the life that was.

“When Lunar passed, my sister ordered these paw print kits because I wanted to capture her paw print, but they didn’t come in time. So, we did it with ink,” said Annalise.

“And then my grandfather, the entrepreneur was like, ‘look what I found. I found a supplier that does inkless paw-print kits’.”

As an artist herself, she already had a love for art as a form of expression but what about the families who didn’t have that same outlet.

Painting each design by hand, the completed portrait can take anywhere from 10 to 30 hours each.

“I remember I painted a black labrador called Gus for a customer and her reaction will always stay with me. She said ‘It’s perfect. I get to see him every day, and it makes me happy cry. I miss him but I get to see him’,” Annalise said.

“I explain to customers that a watercolour portrait is a gentler way to see your pet when they’ve passed away. It’s like a softer way of holding a memory, of reminding yourself of them.”

What started as a letterbox drop of pet portraits back in COVID times has now moved into a nationwide phenomenon.

Brining in six figures last year alone, Annalise Paints is transforming what commemoration looks like for so many of us.

And now, her artwork will be displayed for the world to see in Time Square, New York City.

“Visual Art Journal runs a Times Square Billboard Showcase in New York City for artists around the world, and my artwork was selected,” Annalise said.

“It hasn’t fully sunk in yet, that my pet portraits will be displayed on a billboard where 330,000 people walk past every day. It’s surreal.”
