Who funded the pied pipers of Western Marxism?

Reaching from the construction sites to the Paris academy, Gabriel Rockhill decodes the imperialist theory industry using official state documents.

Thinkers who emerge from the very heart of the Western academy only to bombard that same academy in the most merciless fashion have always been objects of fascination. Yet, the stance put forth by Gabriel Rockhill goes lightyears beyond a mere “insider critique.”

Rockhill is a figure who spent years under the tutelage of names like Derrida and Badiou, flourished at the center of French critical theory, and wore out his elbows in Paris’s most prestigious institutions. But when he looked back, he displayed the courage to decipher the core rot and corruption of this deep-rooted tradition. This is undoubtedly a heavy-hearted task that carries severe consequences, and Rockhill has not shied away from paying that price.

For the Turkish Left, merely recognizing Rockhill is not enough; it must reckon with him. Because Rockhill seeks the answer to a vital question that has been debated in Turkey for decades but has never been presented in such a systematic manner rooted in archival documents: Why did Western Marxism fail to transform into a revolutionary force? How did that colossal tradition stretching from the Frankfurt School to post-structuralism, while appearing to be a radical locus of resistance against capitalism, practically transform into an apparatus that sustained and consolidated it? The naked truth that Rockhill exposes is this: this situation is not a historical coincidence; it is the product of an orchestrated design.

Gabriel Rockhill was born in 1972 in a small farmhouse in the US state of Kansas. The son of a father engaged in farming and construction work, his childhood was spent in fields and construction sites. Long before he even knew the dictionary definition of exploitation and labor, he learned what exploitation was by experiencing it in his own body—under the weight of unpaid family labor and working on construction sites. School was an escape for him, a sanctuary from this heavy physical toll. When he took his seat at the university in Iowa, this farm boy from a provincial high school felt a sense of inadequacy next to his peers who possessed much wealthier intellectual backgrounds. However, this feeling did not crush him; on the contrary, it fueled his determination. He carried the grueling, disciplined work ethic of farming straight into his world of thought.

In the mid-1990s, with a scholarship in hand, he set out for Paris, the heart of French radical theory. His goal was to meet that legendary tradition face-to-face, and indeed he did: he completed his master’s degree under the direction of Luce Irigaray and Jacques Derrida, wrote his doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Alain Badiou, and defended his thesis before a jury chaired by Étienne Balibar. He received multiple master’s and doctoral degrees in philosophy, historical social sciences, and political theory from Paris VIII University and EHESS ( École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales) To these, he added a PhD in philosophy from Emory University. Today, he is a Professor of Philosophy and Global Interdisciplinary Studies, Director of Cultural Studies at Villanova University, and the founding director of the Critical Theory Workshop. He is also one of the editors-in-chief of the World Marxist Review and co-editor of the Anti-Imperialist Marxism book series.

Yet, all these institutional titles and brilliant academic careers are insufficient to explain Rockhill’s true significance. His real monumental achievement lies in the fact that, as a philosopher trained within this elite tradition, he has clearly and explicitly exposed the political economy behind that tradition—namely, who paid whom, and for what purpose.

The turning point of Rockhill’s thought is a ruthless reductionism dominant in bourgeois cultural sciences. The author terms this cultural commodity fetishism. Marx’s theory of commodity fetishism demonstrates how goods in the capitalist order are sacralized by being severed from the social production networks behind them. Today, a consumer holding the latest model smartphone does not see which African country’s minerals were extracted through bloody conflicts to make that device, the semi-slave labor on the assembly line, and the global wheels of exploitation.

According to Rockhill, exactly the same process is operated within the “bourgeois academy”: a thinker’s text or personality cult is idolized by being completely insulated from the material and class relations in which it was produced, distributed, and consumed. To ask who funded a philosopher’s book, who printed it, who translated it, or which capital centers stand behind this theory is instantly declared “vulgar reductionism.” Thus, precisely what the bourgeoisie desires occurs: an imaginary myth of meritocracy is kept alive, where ideas float freely in a vacuum.

Yet, the production of thought is an industry just like any other. This industry also has its workers, bosses, supply chains, and market balances.

Rockhill calls this apparatus the imperialist theory industry and proves how smoothly this wheel turns, utilizing state documents based on a decade of relentless archival work.
