A frantic search for a tourist who vanished at a popular Queensland beach has turned to a recovery effort.
The man, believed to be from the Philippines and aged in his 20s, was reported missing in the water off Main Beach, Gold Coast, about 6.30pm on Tuesday.

Search efforts began soon after alarm was raised, focusing on the southern end of the 2km-long beach.
“Water Police, PolAir, SSUV Beach Rhinos and foot patrols were all involved in the search in conjunction with surf life savers,” police said.
The search continued until 8.30pm when it was suspended until first light on Wednesday.
Emergency services said on Wednesday morning their search efforts were now turning to recovering the tourist’s body.
Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the missing swimmer is urged to contact police.
