Fan favourite Jason Kubler has been unable to get through to the second round of the Australian Open after falling to a straight-sets loss to America’s Frances Tiafoe on the opening day of action.

Kubler came into the clash at John Cain Arena hoping to turn the tables on an opponent he had failed to beat in all three previous attempts.

But unfortunately for the local hope, it was much of the same as Tiafoe stomed to a 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-2 victory in two hours and 13 minutes.

Despite having two set points on Tiafoe’s serve at 5-4 in the first set, Kubler was unable to take his chances as the No.29 seed saved both before taking the first set in a tiebreaker.

In the second set, Kubler managed to snatch an early break, but the big-hitting American broke straight back and won the next four games to claim a commanding 5-2 lead, before eventually winning the set 6-3.

The impressive American, who will celebrate his 28th birthday on Tuesday, belted 53 winners to Kubler’s 22 as he wrapped up the match.

While his singles campaign has come to an end, Kubler will now turn his attentions to new fiancée Maddison Inglis, who will face compatriot Kimberly Birrell on Tuesday evening at John Cain Arena.

Kubler will also team up with Marc Polmans in the doubles in a blockbuster first-round clash against fellow Aussies Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis on Wednesday.

Fellow Aussie Tristan Schoolkate also lost in three sets to the No.32 seed, Frenchman Corentin Moutet, while last year’s runner-up Alexander Zverev survived a scare to defeat Canadian Gabriel Diallo in four sets 6-7 (1-7) 6-1 6-4 6-2.
