A former West Australian police officer and survivor of unthinkable abuse from one of the state’s worst rapists is suing the force over its alleged mishandling of her assault claims.

Nicole Edwards was brutally and mercilessly raped by Adrian Trevor Moore during a date in 2017, after he drugged her, then filmed her.

Edwards bravely waived her right to anonymity, to reveal herself as one of Moore’s 13 victims.

He’s currently serving a 30-year jail term - the harshest ever jail term for a sexual offender in this state - after being convicted of nearly 90 disturbing sex crimes.

A writ filed in the Supreme Court of Western Australia revealed Edwards is seeking damages from Moore and WA Police, claiming the organisation and internal affairs squad minimised her experience when she came to them for help.

It alleged, “The IA (internal affairs) squad engaged in conduct that amounted to misfeasance in public office.”

Edwards alleges the IA squad refused any assistance or involvement by the sexual assault squad.

“Officers of the IA squad interviewing and liaising with the plaintiff in a manner that was not empathic and trauma informed: and not cognisant of her particular vulnerability as a victim of sexual assault and a service police officer.”

The writ states investigating officers reviewed sexually explicit photographs and video footage showing Edwards being violently physically and sexually assaulted by Moore, while she was intoxicated or under the influence of a stupefying drug.

“Having already viewed the sexually explicit photographs and video footage of the plaintiff (Edwards), did not take seriously, and sought to minimise, the plaintiff’s experience of being physically and sexually assaulted and abused by the first defendant (Moore).”

Edwards is asking for damages for intentional acts intended to cause harm and misfeasance in public office.

WA Police was contacted for comment but refused, as the matter is before the courts.

The case is set down for a management hearing in the Supreme Court tomorrow.
