Former NRL star Curtis Scott has been released on bail after spending the night behind bars, accused of assaulting police following a violent altercation at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The 29-year-old walked free from custody in an amicable departure, declining to comment extensively on the charges he now faces.

“It’s obviously been a rough few days,” Scott told reporters outside the cells.

Scott is accused of attacking a teenager at the SCG after the Brisbane-Sydney AFL game on Saturday night, with his alleged victim suffering serious facial injuries. He faced court on Wednesday morning on assault charges.

His lawyer Paul McGirr suggested there was more to the incident than meets the eye.

“There’s a bit more to this. It wasn’t a random attack. There’d been a fight and we’ll look at the evidence in respect to whether there’s self-defence open to him,” McGirr said.

Scott maintained he was protecting his loved ones.

“I was just looking after my family,” he said.

Police allege Scott also assaulted two officers at the Moore Park light rail station that night.

It’s not the first time the former footballer has had an altercation with police. He was wrongly arrested in 2020.

“Obviously I’m going to get painted as a bad guy all the time, but in this case there’s definitely two sides of this story and we’re going to be fighting it to the end,” Scott said.

Police have also charged Scott’s mother, alleging she was involved in the attack.

As part of his bail conditions, Scott is banned from attending the SCG. He will return to court next month.
