The 55-year-old had also faced 12 counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault and charges of assault occasioning bodily harm, but was discharged on those counts.

The court heard Uamaki-Mu, who had worked as a carer, cook and school chaplain, subjected two girls to years of physical abuse.

Her offending included pushing, swearing at and hitting the girls, as well as striking one girl with a cane.

Both victims detailed the lasting toll of the abuse in statements to the court.

“Once I was in consistent therapy, I was diagnosed with complex post-traumatic stress disorder … the symptoms of my diagnosis prevent me from working,” one said.

“This is because every day of my life I experience flashbacks and intrusive memories of the harm that occurred.

“I live in a constant state of always feeling on edge and watching for danger.”

The other victim said she developed an eating disorder and became dependent on alcohol as a way of escaping her anxiety.

“I hated myself, I believed I was the issue,” she said.

“Some mornings I wake up in tears because I’m still alive.”

The court also heard Uamaki-Mu had experienced violence during her own childhood.

Chief Judge Brian Devereaux, SC, described her offending as “appalling”, while acknowledging her mental illness may have contributed to her actions.

“What’s appalling is that you treated them the way you did. It’s criminal,” he said.

“There is no escaping you’ve left a trail of misery.

“It’s clear … they (were) in a state of terror.”

Uamaki-Mu was sentenced to two years in prison but granted immediate parole, allowing her to walk free from court on Monday.

Her husband, Anthony Mu, was by her side in court.

The couple competed together on the 2023 season of My Kitchen Rules, where they were known for their Italian-inspired cooking.

They also ran a market stall selling traditional Italian dishes.
