Former Carlton coach Michael Voss has admitted that the Blues’ resurgence has “warmed his heart”, but wishes he was still in charge to enjoy the rewards.

Voss and Carlton parted ways after the Blues’ lost to Carlton in Round 9 to leave them with a 1-8 win-loss record.

It brought an end to four and a half years in charge, that included a preliminary final appearance in 2023.

Assistant Josh Fraser was installed as interim coach following Voss’ dismissal and led the club on a remarkable seven-match winning streak to eventually seal an unlikely finals berth and be appointed on a permanent basis.

Speaking to LiSTNR’s The Howie Games, Voss opened up on watching the Blues’ stunning resurgence.

“In some ways, when I watch them play ... I see the freedom they play with and the smiles on their faces, I see the brand of football they’re playing and that warms my heart a bit,” he said.

“I’m not going to say it’s rewarding, because clearly, I would love to be there to experience the reward with them. 

“But to be able to see the significance that it’s made, that’s been particular impressive.

“And this becomes the catalyst for them to carry whatever they need to in the future.

“I’ve played my role but it’s now up to someone else’s turn to play their role.” 

Voss’ departure from Carlton was announced early on the Tuesday morning. Voss was at the gym when it leaked out into the media, which created a frenzy around his house when he returned home.

Voss had to sneakily evade the cameras and return to the club to tell the players.

Club bosses fronted the media to explain the decision, but Voss himself didn’t do a media conference.

“I felt like it was important, once the decision has been made ... I gave it a lot of thought about how it was going to happen,” he said.

“Unfortunately the step I wanted to take hadn’t happened because it had already got out in the public forum, I was actually in the gym that morning and a guy came over to me and said, ‘Congratulations on your career.’ I was like, ‘Oh, it’s out.’

“And that was at 7:10am, and my phone started to light up with text messages so I thought, ‘OK, it’s out.’

“I was actually on the phone when (the media turned up at my house), I wasn’t expecting that to happen so quickly, but that’s the by-product of the environment and what I’ve just learnt is that there’s a lot that’s not real. That’s the big part, there’s a story to tell.

“But you have to make sure you give it your own meaning, and it was very important for me how that day went down. I felt the club needed the space to explain their scenario, and didn’t need to be clouded by me sitting there beside them.”

Voss went on to say that he regretted facing the media when departed as Brisbane coach.

Instead of fronting a press conference this time, Voss did a sit-down interview with AFL Media the day after his exit.

“When I was removed from Brisbane, I had the CEO and the chairman, and I was there. I look back at the photos and I hate that I sat there,” he said.

“I sat there on behalf of the club trying to do the right thing, but that doesn’t look right and if I don’t believe in that then I’m not going to do it.

“I felt like the important thing was the club did went down the path they needed to and got the space they needed to.

“But also, I needed the space to be able to communicate what I felt was important. And for people to get the full explanation and not just get soundbites. And I felt that was achieved.”
