Ford has issued an urgent recall affecting two car models over major safety concerns caused by software issues.

The alert was issued for the 2022 Ford Ranger and Ford Everest models, with more than 200 cars affected.

The Department of Transport said the vehicles have a defect caused by a software issue, where if the battery level drops below a critical threshold, the transmission may shift itself into the park position when the vehicle is travelling at speeds below 6km/h.

“This may cause a sudden stop without the rear brake lamps illuminating as intended,” they said.

“A sudden stop whilst driving at low speed and the rear brake lamps not illuminating as intended could increase the potential risk of an accident, causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.”

Ford is expected to contact all affected owners in writing to request they make an appointment at their preferred Ford Authorised Dealership to have repairs carried out, free of charge.

A similar recall was issued in August 2023 for the same fault, affecting more than 4000 Ford Everest and Rangers, listed as 2021 to 2023 models.

Owners are advised their car would need to be “rectified” even if works were performed under the previous recall.
