More than a dozen firearms have been seized from the large outback property where a woman was shot in the hand during what police are treating as a family domestic incident.

Authorities on Friday said “we’re always closer than where we started” in the search for 58-year-old Kenneth John Giles, but conceded there has been no confirmed sightings of him since he drove away from the property near Mullewa, north of Perth in Western Australia’s Mid West, on Wednesday afternoon.

“There’s a number of tracks around the place that can avoid main roads and arterial roads and being a skilled bushman of the area we expect that he’s probably been quite clever and laying quite low,” Superintendent Neil Vanderplank said.

Police are confident Giles remains in the area and believe he may be armed.

The injured woman remains in Royal Perth Hospital in a stable condition, and detectives have spoken with her.

“(She is) very very sore. She’s going through a number of surgeries and follow-up appointments with doctors so that’s, as you can appreciate, going to be a bit tender for a while,” Vanderplank said.

Police are treating the shooting as a family domestic incident and believe Giles was staying at the property, where authorities have seized 16 firearms.

“Farmers have access to lots of firearms, so that wouldn’t be uncommon,” Vanderplank said.

“The specific number ... and whose they are and the rationale for having them will form part of the follow-up investigation.”

They have been “advised” the woman may have been injured by a long-range rifle.

Giles is not a licensed firearms holder, police confirmed.

Two small children, another male and an elderly woman were at the property at the time of the shooting.

The heavy police response was triggered on Wednesday afternoon when police were called to the property on Urawa Rd near Mullewa about 5.30pm.

Investigators have received close to 100 calls from members of the public hoping to help with information and police are “prioritising where we’re sending our resources” in response to those tips.

Vanderplank issued a fresh plea for Giles to hand himself in “so we can end this matter as safely as we can for the community and for himself”.

“We’ll continue to search for Mr Giles until it is resolved,” he said.
