A young man killed in an alleged hit-and-run had quietly become the backbone of his family after his father suffered a life-changing injury, relatives have revealed.

Tamatea “Tama” Harrison , 20, was struck by a car on Middle Rd at Greenbank, south of Brisbane, about 8.45pm on Monday.

Friends rushed to Harrison’s aid before paramedics arrived, but he died at the scene.

Detective Inspector Ian Galpin said on Tuesday police were investigating whether hooning had played a role in the fatal crash.

A fundraiser launched by Harrison’s aunt Anita Harrison and family friend Jenniffer Ross paints the picture of a young man who was there when his family needed him most.

“When his father suffered a devastating injury that left him unable to continue with the business, both physically and mentally, Tama stepped up without hesitation,” the GoFundMe states.

“He took over the family business, managed the home loan and carried responsibilities far beyond his years.

“He became the backbone of the household, quietly keeping everything going while still being the same kind, dependable young man everyone loved.”

The fundraiser says Harrison was a devoted son, brother and friend who loved fishing, camping and working on cars.

“He was tremendously loyal to his family and friends, the kind of young man who would show up at your door before you even realised you needed help,” the organisers wrote.

“He loved cars, had a stubborn streak, and he knew if he wanted good things in life, he had to work hard for them — and he did.”

The family said they remained devastated by his sudden death.

“He didn’t deserve what happened. None of us can believe he’s gone,” the organisers wrote.

The fundraiser has been launched to help his mother Natalie Rose cover funeral costs, ongoing household expenses and financial commitments Harrison had been carrying for his family before his death.

“Any help, no matter the size, is deeply appreciated as we try to honour him and hold each other up through this unimaginable time,” the organisers wrote.

Police have seized an unregistered black Ford Falcon, which is undergoing forensic examination.

Investigators are also seeking the occupants of a white Toyota LandCruiser and a dark-coloured ute seen in the area at the time.

Anyone with dashcam, CCTV or mobile phone footage is urged to contact police.
