A Canberra childcare centre has been shut down and a staff member sacked after a serious medical incident involving a child.

Families at Edge Early Learning in Higgins, in Canberra’s north, were told on July 16 that the ACT’s childcare regulator — the Children’s Education and Care Assurance (CECA) — had issued an immediate closure notice, forcing the centre to shut without warning.

The immediate suspension related to an incident that occurred at the Higgins branch on June 26, involving a child who experienced an unexpected medical episode at the centre.

One parent, who asked not to be named due to her desperate search for a new childcare centre, told 7NEWS.com.au the decision did not shock them.

She’s now on the lookout to find a new centre who has the capacity to fit her children in.

“I had two children in care at the centre, and when I was told, I wasn’t surprised,” she said.

“Everyone knew that something had happened in June, I guess we just had to wait for the authorities to investigate and do their due diligence.

“We entrust these professionals with the lives of our children, and for that trust to be broken ... I don’t think a lot of parents will return to the centre when it re‑opens.”

Edge Early Learning Managing Director and CEO Chris Chambers said in a statement the company had already planned to temporarily consolidate its ACT operations into its Charnwood and Ngunnawal centres, meaning Higgins would close for three months.

“This decision was made partly in response to a child experiencing an unexpected medical episode, and what we consider to be a completely unacceptable response by some of the members of the centre team,” he said.

“Most importantly, the child is OK but the response by the educators involved was unacceptable. 

“One of the educators involved was dismissed after a full investigation, and the other educators involved remain suspended while investigations continue.   “The safety of the children in our care is paramount. We took strong action in relation to team members involved and brought in additional senior leadership to support the centre.”

Chambers said CECA issued its suspension notice on July 16.

The notice requires the centre to be closed until August 13.

“We are disappointed that this action means families will not have the benefit of the phased transition Edge had planned, and we are sorry for the immediate disruption this creates,” he said.

“Our focus remains on supporting the families in our Edge community, and continuing to work with CECA in a collaborative, transparent manner.”

It remains unknown when the centre will be re-opened by Edge Early Learning.

It’s not the first incident the Edge Early Learning chain has found itself in the spotlight over with a child, attending a centre in South Australia, recently given food they were allergic to. The centre had moved to a new producer for meatballs before the incident ocurred.
