A detective run down by a drug-fuelled driver says he “100 per cent” feels lucky to be alive.

Detective Senior Constable Greg McDougall was critically injured when he was dragged and then struck by a Toyota HiLux that police had stopped in Belmont, Perth, in September 2024.

The court was told Brenden Green, then 37, had about one kilogram of meth in his car, and that he had drugs in his system, when he was pulled over.

McDougall was at Green’s driver’s side window when Green hit the accelerator.

The police officer was dragged a number of metres before he fell and was run over, suffering fractured bones and damaged organs.

He spent more than a month in hospital and more in rehabilitation and has only just returned to normal police duties.

Speaking after Green was sentenced on Tuesday, McDougall said he “100 per cent” feels lucky to be alive.

“I know I’ve been given a second chance. I’ll give it all I’ve got,” he said.

McDougall has no memory of the incident, but it was captured on his body-worn camera. He does not plan to watch the vision.

The father-of-three said the ordeal had been tough on his children, who “still don’t want me to go to work”.

WA Police Assistant Commissioner Tony Longhorn said that “any time an officer is injured it sends ripples through the force”.

“We all take stock of the value of life,” he said

Green was jailed for almost 12 years during sentencing in the district court.

“He’s extremely remorseful and he wishes to apologise for the injuries to detective McDougall and the trauma that he’s caused to both him and his family,” his lawyer said.

He will be eligible for parole in 2034.
