AFLW great and Channel 7 star Kate McCarthy has joined Aussie rocker Alex Lahey on stage for a cameo performance just weeks after picking up a guitar for the first time.

Lahey is currently touring Australia with headline shows in Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and, last Friday night, at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel, where she was joined by former Brisbane, St Kilda and Hawthorn speedster, McCarthy.

McCarthy, who hosts a podcast with Lahey and is close friends with the rockstar, had never played guitar before starting to learn around 10 weeks ago.

Announcing her cameo back in June, McCarthy said it was a childhood dream to perform on stage.

“Basically what we’ve learnt from that podcast is that Alex’s dream as a rockstar was to always be an athlete, and my dream as an athlete was to always be a rockstar, and we kind of have opposite trajectories,” McCarthy said at the time on Triple M’s Deadset Legends.

“My big announcement today is: on Friday the 21st of August at the Corner Hotel, I will be shredding on electric guitar with Alex Lahey.

“I have 69 days to learn a song on the electric guitar.”

Asked how long she’d been playing guitar, McCarthy said: “Never. I have to learn one of my favourite songs by Alex Lahey.”

But she was more than confident she would get it done.

“I’m not going to play — I’m going to shred,” she said

Backstage before the show on Friday night, the 7AFL and AFLW expert commentator remained calm — at least on the outside.

“I feel like I’ve done enough jobs where I just fake it till I make it, so I think we’re all good,” she said.

Lahey introduced McCarthy on stage for their final song before the encore, and one of her biggest hits, I Haven’t Been Taking Care Of Myself, which has more than seven million streams on Spotify alone.

“Never has she played guitar before. Never has she performed music on stage before,” Lahey said as McCarthy walked out to the sold-out crowd.

“Huge night for people who know four chords,” McCarthy joked on social media after the show.
