A hospital patient has been grabbed by the throat during a violent takedown involving two security guards.

Disturbing video from May 31 showed the patient walk towards the guards in a surrender position before he was seized, slammed onto a couch and pinned down.

The incident was captured on CCTV inside Kalgoorlie Health Campus, a regional facility in the gold-mining town of Kalgoorlie, about 600km east of Perth.

“It’s very distressing footage,” WA Premier Roger Cook said on Monday.

7NEWS understands the hospital had called a “code black” after healthcare staff reported an immediate risk to safety. 

The question now is not whether the guards have a right to restrain a patient allegedly threatening the safety of others, but whether they used excessive force.

WA Country Health says the incident is deeply concerning, confirming both men will never again work at WA hospitals.

The guards have also been stood down by the security contractor Advanced Protection Plus.

Advanced Protection Plus currently holds $62.5 million in state government security contracts across WA hospitals, schools and correctional facilities.

Cook said “no” when asked if there is a violence issue in WA’s regional hospitals.

“We want people to feel safe and secure when they go to one of our hospitals,” the premier said.

WA Police are investigating whether the incident constitutes criminal charges.
