A boy has suffered serious leg injuries in a shark attack in Sydney’s east.

Emergency services were called to Hermitage Foreshore Walk on Steele Point Rd in Vaucluse, near Shark Beach, about 4.20pm on Sunday.

The boy, believed to be aged about 13, was wading in the water when he was bitten by a shark.

He was rescued from the water by police and Marine Area Command officers soon after an emergency call was made to triple-0.

Two tourniquets were applied to the boy’s legs and he was given first aid on board a police boat before being transported to Rose Bay wharf, where paramedics continued first aid.

NSW Ambulance said the boy suffered critical injuries to both legs.

A CareFlight helicopter was deployed, however the boy was ultimately taken to hospital by road.

His injuries are consistent with what is believed to have been a large shark, police said.

The beach has since been closed and swimmers are being advised to avoid the water.
