Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan has scored an extraordinary first Test century in just his second match, showing up Australia’s vaunted attack to push his side into the lead in Darwin.

The tourists turned the screws early on day two with Tanzid untroubled by Mominul Haque’s departure for 49 before lunch.

Tanzid, bouncing back from a duck and 22 in the warm-up match against a Cricket Australia XI last week, was so comfortable at the crease he even forced Pat Cummins into a desperate review wasted when replays showed a significant gap between bat and ball.

Six overs later the 25-year-old ODI regular thumped Beau Webster for six over long off.

Tanzid’s driving through cover and point was exquisite and his shot selection was outstanding after a shaky start late on the opening day.

There were some nervy moments when just four runs from his maiden ton.

“You can only imagine what’s going through his mind right now,” Will Pucovski said on Channel 7.

But Tanzid survived and brought up his century with a single off Nathan Lyon just as a drinks break neared.

“No better place to do it against Australia in Australia, just your second Test match,” Ricky Ponting said.

“Been brought up on slow, low turning pitches in Bangaldesh. It’s been completely different but he’s played beautifully. That’s a moment he will never, ever forget.”

Tanzid paid the price after the emotional release of his century, though, dismissed soon after when he swung at a full ball from Nathan Lyon to be caught by Mitchell Starc.

“The big elation, that big moment, can he refocus and go big? Well, the answer is no,” Trent Copeland said.

Greg Blewett said: “Bit of a freebie there for Australia. He got to that magnificent milestone, he’s tried to hit out and it’s cost him his wicket. But let’s not take away the fact he has played beautifully to get to his 100.”

The opener’s dismissal moved Bangladesh to 3-231 with a lead of 33 as veteran Mushfiqur Rahim arrived at the crease.

The wicket was not without concern for Australia after Starc’s knee dug into the turf, with the paceman shaking out his leg as he got to his feet.

Tanzid has 40 ODI and 53 T20 appearances to his name but only debuted in Test cricket in May against Pakistan.

He made only 26 and four.

It was a different story in Darwin, with Ponting was singing his praises as he entered the nervous 90s.

“Tanzid has been very impressive. Patient,” Ponting said.

“I’ve liked how solid he looks in defence, the technique’s very simple, defending the good ones and putting the bad balls away.”

Tanzid earlier lucked out once when an edge deflected off Australian keeper Alex Carey and was dropped by Steve Smith at first slip.

Otherwise none of Australia’s bowlers had an answer, with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto also keeping the pressure on to reach a half-century.

The conditions early provided bounce and carry for Australia, and a healthy amount of seam as well, but Mominul brought up the 100 for Bangladesh with a flick through the leg side off Cummins for four.

The 34-year-old has been a wonderfully consistent player in Test cricket for Bangladesh, reaching double figures in 17 consecutive innings dating back to April of last year.

He was on the cusp of his eighth half-century in that period but nicked a waft off Josh Hazlewood to fall one run short.
