An Australian has died in Vietnam, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has confirmed.

DFAT said on Wednesday it was “providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian who died in Vietnam”.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time,” a spokesperson said.

“Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment.”

The circumstances surrounding the Australian’s death remain unclear.

Vietnam is a popular destination for Australian travellers, with about 397,000 Australians visiting the country in the first seven months of this year, placing Australia among its top 10 international visitor markets.
