Australian Test great Mitchell Starc has shared details of the laborious strapping routine he undergoes every time he bowls.

Speaking to Channel 7 ahead of Day 2 of the first Test against Bangladesh, Starc appeared in his Birkenstock sandals with his right foot perfectly wrapped up like a Christmas present, tape neatly tucked around his ankle and four smaller toes.

“I want to talk this stuff,” Channel 7 commentator and former bowler Trent Copeland said.

“People at home, they see you in Test whites steaming in, bowling 150 quite often. Everyone just thinks you’re a robot, but look at all the tape on these things, particularly those little melons poking out the end there (referring to his toes).”

Starc simply said that he had to look after them, revealing he strapped them up every single time he bowled.

“Which is a lot,” the 36-year-old confessed.

Copeland: “Just keeping the ankle together.”

Starc: “They say prevention is better than cure. And I’ve had enough surgeries on my ankle so ... (and) I try to keep the skin on my toes. But there’s a bit of tape on that ankle, yeah.”

Starc said he was a “heel strike” bowler and the strapping was to help with the “impingement at the back”.

“And there’s a few things over the years in there,” he said.

Copeland later revealed that Starc had asked him if he wanted to put shoes on before appearing on TV.

“I was like, ‘You know what, no!’ I mean it’s ugly to look at, sorry about that. But this is some of the stuff that the public doesn’t see,” Copeland said on Channel 7.

“He was saying, ‘do you want me to cover up?’ That is every day for this guy. Every time he bowls a ball, whether it’s in the nets ... think about the thousands of times that has happened.

“And that is his front foot landing 8-10 times his body weight, which is likely between 90 and 100 kilos. Every single time he bowls the ball.

“We talk about the physical prowess, the unicorn that he is, playing all five Tests of every summer, bowling 140, first ball, last ball.

“It’s that sort of precautionary, or getting ahead of it, measures to look after the Achilles in that front foot landing.”

Speaking about the match, Starc admitted it had not been a great a start.

“We’re a little bit behind the eight ball on the first innings, but we’ve seen this wicket get better,” he told Channel 7.

“We’ve had a little bit of a look at it for our batters as well and their bowling attacks. So, there’s a lot of cricket to be played. Obviously, we’ve got to take these nine wickets, and look, I thought we bowled pretty well.

“They’re obviously a short batting unit, so we’ve probably got to get that ball a fraction fuller. They were pretty comfortable just leaving anything wide of the stumps pretty compact when it was there to respect, and then when we over-pitched, they probably cashed in a little bit on those over-pitched balls.”

“They’re a short batting unit, these guys, and so they’re pretty comfortable with leaving on length, and it was probably a little bit less movement as the day went on.

“The wicket probably dried out a little bit, and looking at these marks on the wicket, they don’t look as tacky to the eye as it was yesterday, so there might be a little bit this morning ... maybe a little bit of sideways movement.”
