Tragic Loss: Mother Issues Allergy Warning After Daughter Dies From Ready Meal

A grieving mother is urging vigilance after her 20-year-old daughter, Jess North, tragically died from an anaphylactic reaction on May 9, 2021, after eating just a few bites of a ready meal. Jess, who had a severe peanut allergy, unknowingly consumed nuts in the dish.

Maxine, Jess’s mother, from Aldingbourne, West Sussex, recounted the heartbreaking day. While preparing a Sunday roast, Jess decided on a frozen sweet potato dish she believed she had safely eaten before. Despite the meal containing nuts,Jess assumed it was safe.

“She only had a couple of mouthfuls before stopping,” Maxine told The Argus. Jess was on her way to meet a friend and said goodbye to her parents.

Just minutes later,Maxine received a frantic call. “Within 10 minutes, Jess called, struggling to breathe. The fear in her voice was unmistakable; I knew she was having an allergic reaction.”

Jess, near arundel on the A27, was instructed by her mother to pull over and use her EpiPen, something she had never done before.Maxine and her husband raced to their daughter’s location.

A passerby, initially thinking Jess was having an asthma attack, offered an inhaler. Realizing Jess was signaling for her EpiPen, the individual administered it, but incorrectly into her arm instead of her thigh.Paramedics rushed Jess to St Richards Hospital in Chichester. After three days on life support, an MRI revealed the extent of the damage. Doctors informed the family they couldn’t assess the damage until she woke up.

The following day, attempts to remove jess from life support proved unsuccessful. A subsequent MRI scan revealed the devastating truth: there was no brain activity.

“I can’t remember much from that point,” maxine shared. “All I knew was my lovely baby had gone, and our life had changed forever.”

Since Jess’s death, Maxine has become a passionate advocate for allergy awareness, particularly regarding the importance of up-to-date EpiPens. The family discovered Jess had a junior EpiPen instead of an adult one. Maxine’s advocacy has already prompted her GP to implement reminder alerts for patients with severe allergies.

She is also raising funds for The Natasha Allergy Foundation (NARFS), established in memory of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, who tragically died in 2016 from a sesame allergy after eating a Pret a Manger baguette. Maxine will participate in a charity abseil down Peacehaven Cliffs in July to support Kitt medical Devices, providing life-saving anaphylaxis treatment in schools and public places. Donations can be made through her GoFundMe page.

This tragedy echoes the story of George Cadman-Ithell, whose mother received a text message of a snack he was enjoying before his phone went silent forever. George, who had a walnut allergy, unknowingly consumed cured sausages containing walnuts. Despite administering an epipen, George suffered a cardiac arrest, resulting in severe brain damage and leaving him in a vegetative state.
