A man has been charged after another man died following a disturbance at a home in the Adelaide Hills on Monday.

Police were called to Paterson Lane in Mount Barker, near the local high school, just before 10pm.

When officers arrived, the 39‑year‑old victim had already been taken to hospital in a private vehicle, where he died a short time later.

The alleged offender had fled before police arrived, prompting a search of the surrounding hills area.

Patrols located a 25‑year‑old Pooraka man nearby and he was arrested.

He has now been charged with assault, following a downgrade of charges from murder after a postmortem examination determined the victim’s cause of death was a pre-existing medical condition.

The 25-year-old has not applied to bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court later on Tuesday.

Detectives believe the incident was not random, confirming the two men were known to each other.

No other suspects are being sought.

Major Crime investigators and local patrols remain at the scene as inquiries continue into the circumstances of the fatal confrontation.
