North Melbourne veteran Griffin Logue has been revealed to have undergone a full shoulder reconstruction in the AFL off-season.

The 28-year-old defender had a mixed year for the Kangaroos, suffering a hamstring injury early before being dropped to the VFL for a month.

He earned a recall for the last five weeks of the AFL season and finished with 16 games to his name, but will now enter the pre-season on the back foot.

Logue suffered a shoulder injury in a “non-football incident” and will not take part in contact training until January, reports Channel 7’s Tom Morris.

The setback comes with Logue having two more years to run on his contract after joining the Roos from Fremantle at the end of 2022.

He also stands to remain an important figure under new coach Jaymie Graham following North’s failure to secure contracted key defender Nick Murray from Adelaide at the trade deadline this week.

The Kangaroos offered picks No.33 and No.49 in this year’s draft as well as 2027 first and third-round picks, with Murray and a future fourth-round pick going the other way.

But Adelaide list boss Jarryd Roughead was unmoved.

North counterpart Brady Rawlings said the trade period would have gone down as “really successful” for the club had the trade materialised.

Be the first to know:

“When you’re looking at contracted players it can always be difficult,” he said.

“We had a crack, Adelaide said no, so yeah, fair enough. We tried our hardest but it wasn’t quite good enough.”

Murray has only played 78 AFL games since 2021 and managed just 11 this season.

In fact, over his past three years, he has appeared in only 32 senior games for the Crows.

“I would have thought for Nick Murray, if I can editorialise for one moment, it’s not my role, that probably could have been enough,” TOm Morris said on Channel 7’s The Agenda Setters.

Brownlow medallist Tom Mitchell added: “Four picks is a fair bit, isn’t it?” with Morris noting that three of them were in the first or second round.

Player manager Liam Pickering said Murray’s value had skyrocketed and he was suddenly comparable to a former North Melbourne superstar and Brownlow medallist.

“Yeah, he’s turned into Ross Glendinning, there’s no doubt about that, over the last few weeks,” Pickering said.

“Well, he’s a good player, but he’s not worth four picks.”

Morris said: “No, he’s not quite Glen Jakovich yet,” referring to West Coast’s champion defender from the 1990s.

Mitchell said: “I feel like that might be one we look back on in time and say, you know, we could have done with a few more picks.”

AFL expert Kane Cornes said he failed to understand why Adelaide didn’t do the deal, adding that Murray would not command such value again.

Adelaide list boss Jarryd Roughead explained the club didn’t want to lose another key defender after Jordon Butts left as a free agent.

“We’re in a win now phase. So, losing two key defenders as I’ve said is going to be quite hard. That tests our depth. So if we’re in a win-now phase, why would we give away two key defenders?” he said.
