An accused gunman has been arrested and charged a day after he allegedly shot a man inside his own home in front of his partner on the NSW Central Coast.

Police allege the 20-year-old broke into a home on Lakedge Ave in Berkeley Vale about 6.15am on Wednesday and confronted a 37-year-old man before shooting him at least twice.

The older man’s partner was home at the time and witnessed the shooting but was not injured, Tuggerah Lakes Police District Commander Superintendent Chad Gillies said on Wednesday.

Emergency services arrived to find the 37-year-old with gunshot wounds to his hand and torso.

He was treated at the scene before being flown to hospital, where he remained in a stable condition on Friday. 

Police later identified a car allegedly used in the shooting and tracked it to Penrith.

Investigators then identified a man they allege was the gunman, who police say had been wearing a balaclava during the shooting.

He was arrested about 8.45am on Thursday at Gosford train station, where police allegedly found cocaine and cannabis in his possession.

Officers later executed a search warrant at a home in Penrith, where they seized a number of items, including a Glock pistol and eight rounds of ammunition.

The 20-year-old was charged with 11 offences, including shooting with intent to murder, discharging a firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and other firearms offences.

He appeared in court on Friday and was refused bail. 

He is due to return to court on November 3.

NSW Police Detective Acting Superintendent Brad Abdy on Friday said the accused man was known to police for minor offences, including traffic matters.

Police do not believe the alleged gunman and victim had any prior connection.

Abdy said investigators believed the 20-year-old acted alone and police were not looking for anyone else in relation to the shooting.

The motive remains unclear, and police are investigating whether the shooting was linked to gang or organised crime.

Abdy said current levels of gang violence were “concerning” and police were working to disrupt criminal networks and prevent further violence.

“I think this event ... that we’ve arrested someone within 24 hours, demonstrates that the police will do everything they can to identify these criminals, and arrest them and put them before the court,” he said. 

“In addition to that there’s police every single minute of every single day on the streets of Sydney trying to prevent these types of crimes before they occur.”
